What is Brent Crude?
Brent crude is a light sweet crude oil blend extracted from oilfields in the North Sea between the United Kingdom and Norway. Named after the Brent oilfield (itself named after a goose), the benchmark today is actually a basket of Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk, and Troll crudes (BFOET). Brent is the world's most widely used oil benchmark — roughly two-thirds of internationally traded crude is priced against it. Because North Sea fields are waterborne, Brent can be shipped anywhere by tanker, which makes its price a faithful reflection of global supply, demand, and geopolitical risk. The ICE Brent futures contract in London is the primary venue for hedging and price discovery, with settlement delivered physically via the Sullom Voe terminal in Scotland.
Brent vs WTI Difference
Brent and WTI are both light sweet crudes, but Brent comes from ocean platforms while WTI is landlocked in the US midcontinent. Brent typically trades at a premium of $2–$6 over WTI because shipping flexibility and exposure to global demand give it a higher risk premium — especially during Middle East tensions, Red Sea shipping disruptions, or Russian oil sanctions. WTI can occasionally trade above Brent during US pipeline bottlenecks or when OPEC+ cuts hit Atlantic Basin supply harder.
What Moves the Brent Price?
- OPEC+ decisions — Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Russia collectively control enough barrels to swing Brent by several dollars within a day of a meeting.
- Middle East geopolitics — Any threat to Strait of Hormuz transit, Iran-Israel escalation, or Yemen Houthi Red Sea attacks instantly lifts Brent through the risk premium.
- Global demand growth — Chinese refinery throughput, European diesel demand, and aviation recovery all feed directly into Brent pricing.
- US dollar & interest rates — A stronger dollar or higher rates depress commodity demand worldwide.
- Russia & sanctions — G7 price caps, shadow-fleet logistics, and pipeline disruptions directly shape Atlantic Basin supply.
